Yesterday for the first time ever, well not counting the peas I’ve eaten straight from the shell, we ate something I grew… by.my.self.from.seed. I know I’m a dork but

I really can’t help dorking out over this one. I did something really simple. Just boiled the potatoes. We had grilled chicken, grilled sausages, grilled corn and a green salad. Nom nom! I also poured myself a glass of perry cider but then didn’t drink it. I did a quick pro points calculation and realized I just blew my points on the sausages. I need to get better at pointing out my food before it goes down my pie-hole!!

This past weekend we had a belated 4th of July BBQ. During the bbq people were admiring our peas and chatting generally about gardening. I was telling everyone that they need to grow peas. Sooo easy peasy! HAR!! I pointed to my yellowing and dying potato plants as proof that I don’t know what I’m doing. Someone suggested I go a “harvest” my potatoes.

I was a bit sceptical, I vaguely recalled reading that they wouldn’t be ready to harvest until late summer. Hey ho what the hell I thought let’s see how these puppies are growing. I pulled on one of the shoots and pulled out a potato about the size of a small marble! So I thew it at my friend and we had a good laugh about them. I thought that with the leaves turning yellow that I must have done something wrong. Live and learn, next year I’ll do a better job. This morning I thought I’d loosen the soil. Maybe that was the reason they weren’t growing. So I stuck my hands in there to shake the soils a bit and grabbed hold of a potato– a biggish one! Sooooo Squidge and I both got in on the action…

Not a bad little harvest if I do say so myself! Tomorrow supper will involve these potatoes and some peas. Grown from seed, my me and Squidge!!

The weather here has been perfect for growing things. It rains then the sun comes out (rinse. repeat). Because the weather has been so crap I haven’t been going out to the garden much. I figured everything was getting watered so all was good. The other day Wal went out to the garage for something and I heard him shout for me to come outside– QUICK! So off I ran with my bare feet thinking something was wrong. I could not have been more wrong. Can you believe I grew these? From seeds!! They still need a little more time to plump up but they did taste yummy! I can’t wait to see how the carrots and onions are doing.

I have a dream. A dream that one day itty bitty chickens will walk and cluck free in my garden. So to that end I bought a book. That’s all I’ve done but hey it’s a book. I’m now thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much closer to my dream.

The house we’ve moved into has some lovely gardens. They’re a bit overgrown as I don’t think the old couple who lived here were able to keep up with it towards the end. I’ve been reading up on how to prune roses. We have lots of roses! I’m very excited about this as I love roses so I’m hoping to bring them back to life. We had loads of blackberries but I’ve pulled all those up as they were wild brambles and although they were very tasty there were really a weed that choked the life out of everything else. I’ve picked up a blueberry and raspberry bush that in time I hope will provide up w/ lots of yummy goodness. Also picked up seed potatoes and onions. Am on the look out for carrots, cucumbers, french beans, strawberries and cherry tomatoes. I might try some heirloom tomatoes too, I’ve heard they’re unbelievable delicious. I’m also putting an old carpet (lucky for me I just removed the old yucky bathroom carpet!) over a couple of the raised beds to warm them up for some early planting. The tip came from Deb over at Carrots and Kids — go read her blog she’s fab. It’s fab! I’m calling my little adventure Project Greenfingers!! Yes, I do need to label all my projects.
