little of this. little of that

nothing much going on here so I’m struggling w/ the blogging again.  We’ve been doing some DIY– the entryway of our house is now organized w/ a nice handy dandy shoe organizer from Ikea.  I also picked up a sideboard type table from Ikea for the kitchen.  Wal has been slogging away in the bathroom– no it still isn’t done.

Last Friday we met up w/ Byrney & Co and had a bit of a picnic.

While we were there C asked if Squidge could come over after school. So we headed there later on in the day for a bit of a play and some supper– thanks B for feeding my kid!!

Afterwards we headed home to change into our jammies for the long drive to Liverpool to pick up Daddy.  She fell asleep 1/2 way there so good thing we changed into jammies.  In the morning when she woke up and daddy was home there was a very happy little girl.

Chaaaa chaaaaa changes

*sob* We finally did it– we converted Squidge’s cot into a toddler bed.  We’ve talked about it for months and months.  We had talked about changing it last CHRISTMAS.  I kept putting it off because she is such a good sleeper and I didn’t want to mess that up.  Friends would tell me that they changed over when their little ones started to climb out or if they needed the cot because #2/#3 was on it’s way.  Well she never did try to climb out of it and #2 looks a long way off so something had to give.  This weekend I decided that enough was enough and to just do it.  I want to start potty training at night and that wasn’t going to happen if she was still trapped in a cot.

I thought I took photos of her helping Dad w/ the change over but apparently I just thought about taking some photos.  So because I’m slack and haven’t documented what I’m sure to all of you would have been an utterly fascinating series of photographs here are some of her bedtime routine.  When I say routine I should add that this is not in fact representative of her bedtime routine because we don’t read to her sitting on the floor by her bed.  We read to her in the living room on a nice soft squishy sofa.  So lets just pretend mmmm k?

Ooops! Someone forgot to brush someone’s hair.

there is some serious thumb sucking going on here.

there is some serious thumb sucking going on here.

Oooh no it isnt. I like Tiddlers stories said little Johnny Dory

Oooh no it isn’t. I like Tiddler’s stories said little Johnny Dory

After some more ferocious thumb sucking it was time to turn off the lights.  This is just about the time where she went from being out of her mind excited about her new sleeping arrangement to not so excited.  It took a couple of times going back into her room but she did finally settle down and fall asleep.  All and all not as bad as it could have been.  I checked on her a little later…

Buddy her constant companion

It’s been 3 days and so far it’s been alright.  She’s been having nightmares but I’m not sure if that’s the change or her age.  Coming soon a post about that great big stuffed dog she’s sleeping with.

Bicycle! BIKE!!! BIIIIIIIIKE!

Posted on July 17, 2009

Wal and I have been on the lookout for a bike for Squidge, one that didn’t have slutty dolls, princesses or cartoons.  Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find a bike like that??  I didn’t want it to be pink either, I like primary colours so thought that a nice red bike would be fantastic. We finally struck gold when Wal checked out Ridgeback (Wal has a ridgeback mountain bike) and found they have a fantastic line of kids bikes.  The bike is pink (sigh) and it is devoid of any decals depicting slutty dolls, silly prinesses or big breasted Barbie dolls.  There are no explorers or tanks and trains or anything like that.  It’s just a plain bike.  <insert contented sigh here>.  Now I’m sure most of you are wondering why it’s such a big deal and I suppose in the grand scheme of things it’s not a big deal.  I just feel like she is exposed enough already.  I don’t need her toothbrush to have a Thomas the Tank engine on it or her bike to be sponsored by Bratz.  They should just be toothbrushes and bikes.  So while I still have a little bit of control I’m made a conscious decision not to buy items that are emblazoned w/ the latest and greatest cartoon.

OK so I lied a little bit– the bike DOES have a decal on it. Do you see it on the top picture? That little blog on the bar right under the seat?  It’s a cartoon face of a girl.  I’m thinking it’s suppose to be Honey as that’s the ‘name’ of the bike.

Squidge is getting to be an expert on the bike.  When we were at the bike shop she didn’t even know how to get on so anything would be an improvement.  I’ve added a cute bell and a basket (not shown) so she’s styling.  Now we have to get my bike and we’ll be able to head out for a bit of family fun– I can’t wait!!

Edited to add: This is not to say that she doesn’t own loads of ‘disney’ just that I try to find alternatives if they’re available.

We interrupt this blogging break to say…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY!! YOURE AN OLD GIT NOWHOW’S IT FEEL??

Today was Wal’s birthday.  To celebrate Squidge and I baked him a chocolate cake.  We had a blast and Squidge was soooo very excited about eating CHOCOLATE cake. Apparently chocolate is her favorite (her favorite changes depending on what is in front of her mouth ready for eating) and she couldn’t wait to eat the cake. As you can see by the second to last photo. She sat there like that until Wal got home– it was too funny.

I won’t say how old he is– that would be rude.  I will only say that he’s half way to 90.
