Yesterday we had a bit of a party for Squidge– a BBQ/Pool party. After weeks and weeks of rain yesterday looked like it was going to turn out to be a gorgeous day. We here at Casa da Vavo held our breath as we got organized
I spent the night before baking and decorating her Winnie the Witch inspired birthday cake. I wanted it to be ready for when she woke up in the morning. When she noticed it she gave a great gasp. I told her it was her Winnie the Witch** birthday cake and she informed me it wasn’t tall* enough! Aaaah well I just told her that Winnie is very big and she is only a little girl so her cake is little girl sized. She was happy with this explanation.

Squidge had a fantastic time and wants to have another birthday party tomorrow.
*In the book Winnie conjures up a cake that is 8 layers– black forest, orange, ginger sponge, strawberry shortcake, cheesecake, rainbow, fruit cake and chocolate. Needless to say I wasn’t about to make a cake that big but I think I got the essence of it.
**If you’ve never read any of the Winnie the Witch books you NEED to go and read them this.very.second!! The books are written by Valerie Thomas and illustrated by Korky Paul***. I absolutely love Paul’s illustrations and have purchased books just because he is the illustrator. I will say that the combo of Thomas and Paul is my favorite at the moment. I’m looking forward to reading more books illustrated by Korky Paul.
*** Dear Mr Paul, I wouldn’t turn down an original illustration.

oh my. LOVE the cake. well done. I adore these pics. I have so enjoyed watching your squidge grow this past year. sigh.…she is so beautiful.
I think her cake looks fantastic!!!!!!!!! And tell her we’re free for a second party in a few weeks!!! Oh and we need another winnie cake!! (only joking about the cake it must have taken ages!!)
I’m totally impressed. I burn cinnamon buns out of the package. I could never make a cake that awesome! Nice job!
Oh wow, you are so very clever! LOL at her wanting a taller cake. It’s absolutely awesome.
Love those books, my boys have got quite a lot of them
sounds like a fun birthday! chloe has one of the Winnie books — a gift from my SIL in the UK, she loves it.
What a creation!
What a fantastic cake!!!! Glad the birthday girl enjoyed it. xx
Mmmm, yummy. I don’t think my kids have had the books, so I will have to go and look for them.
